Cultural Networking Reception

Lekwungen Dancers

The Cultural Networking Reception takes place in one of Canada’s oldest continually operating museums, the Royal British Columbia Museum, a 5-minute walk from the Symposium venue. Experience an indigenous and historical journey of British Columbia when visiting selected galleries and exhibits, including a First Nation’s long house, a recreation of an early townsite and the spectacular ocean life on Canada’s west coast.

The evening begins with an Indigenous inspired mocktail on arrival and a welcome by the Lekwungen Traditional Dancers, on whose land the Symposium and Reception takes place.  While viewing the galleries guests can take photographs with the dancers in their traditional regalia and  enjoy a reception menu showcasing indigenous themed hors d’oeuvres.

GALLERY DESCRIPTIONS

1) Natural History Gallery: Journey through 80 million years of British Columbia history!

Coastal Forest: From Haida Gwaii to Vancouver Island
In this domed room, you enter the magnificent coast forest of British Columbia. You are surrounded by massive trunks of Sitka spruces, Douglas firs and western redcedars. Listen to the bird calls and an occasional elk “bugle”. Peek around the corner to the right and stare into the face of a cougar.

Seashore: The colourful and the cryptic
Peer into a tidepool and discover the spectacular diversity and richness of marine life that lives along British Columbia’s rugged seashores. Observe the colourful and the cryptic, as a variety of live animals—from anemones and snails to urchins and fishes—compete for food and shelter, each avoiding the threat of a hungry predator.

Ocean Station: A living lab
Experience the underwater world off of BC’s coast in a Victorian-era submarine. Similar to a Jules Verne story, this masterpiece exhibit is sure to capture your imagination with tales (and tails!) of mesmerizing marine life.

Ice Age: A study in contrasts
Travel to the distant past in the Green House-Ice House gallery. Gaze upward at a fantastic panorama of subtropical Vancouver Island. See spectacular palm and ammonite fossils from the land and sea when our region had a subtropical climate 80 million years ago.

Climate Rules! Looking toward a warmer future
The Earth’s restless atmosphere has many surprises in store for us in the coming decades. In one of the first galleries ever built that explains how climate is changing as a consequence of global warming, you learn the differences between weather and climate.

Fraser River Delta: The largest and one of the rarest
Stroll along the boardwalk to experience the sights and sounds of the Fraser River Delta. Remarkably, the Fraser River Delta is the largest estuary on North America’s Pacific coast, and yet represents one of the rarest ecosystems in the province.

2) Old Town Gallery: Experience a British Columbia Town back in the day
It’s a new take on an old town with this dynamic, reopened space. Old Town, New Approach, part of the former Becoming BC permanent modern history gallery, reopened to the public in July 2023 with new contextual panels designed to inform and inspire visitors and reflect the museum’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

3) Bonus Exhibit - Global Threads: The Art and Fashion of Indian Chintz
Step into a fascinating world of colour and discover how India’s vibrant cottons inspired global fashion trends, transforming everything from t-shirts to floral prints. Featuring 80 objects spanning 10 centuries and 4 continents, this original Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) exhibition showcases India's painted and printed cottons, revealing their enduring impact on art, science and fashion while uncovering their complicated history of labour and consumption.
